Here is a list of web sites for various awards or prizes that are granted to children’s literature titles.

The John Newbery Medal

This is the site to visit for all the information you need on the Newbery Medal granted to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Included are current medal and honor winners with book jacket covers and a brief annotation. Also helpful is a quick, print-out-able list of all Newbery winners in the past, along with a longer list of winners and honor titles. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal

Awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. At this site, you will find the same information as listed above for the Newbery Medal. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

The Coretta Scott King Award

This award honors African American authors and illustrators for outstanding contributions to children's and young adult literature that promote understanding and appreciation of the culture and contribution of all people to the realization of the American Dream. The Award is designed to commemorate the life, works and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue that work for peace and world brotherhood. The Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal

This award honors Mildred L. Batchelder, a former executive director of the Association for Library Service to Children, and a believer in the importance of good books for children in translation from all parts of the world. The award, established in her honor in 1966, is a citation awarded to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

The Pura Belpre Award

This award was established in 1996, and is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. It is awarded biennially by the Association for Library Services to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards

 Since 1967, The Boston Globe and The Horn Book, Inc., have co-sponsored the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards for excellence in literature for children and young adults. The awards are considered among the most prestigious in the nation. A list of the 1999 award winners and honor books is given along with links to previous winners.

Hans Christian Andersen Award

The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are given biennially by the International Board On Books For Young People to an author and to an illustrator, living at the time of nomination, who by outstanding value of their work are judged to have made a lasting contribution to literature for children and young people. The complete works of the author and of the illustrator are taken into consideration in awarding the medal, which is accompanied by a diploma.

 Andrew Carnegie Medal

The Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video, supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, was awarded for the first time in 1991 to honor outstanding video productions for children released during the previous year. The annual award is given to the video's producer by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, through a Carnegie endowment.

National Book Award for Young People’s Literature

Presented by the National Book Foundation each year in November to recognize the outstanding contribution to children's literature annually. The National Book Award for Young People's Literature carries a $10,000 cash prize and the award committee considers books of all genres written for children and young adults by U.S. writers with an emphasis on literary merit. The Young People's category was added to the National Book Awards in 1996. A Children's Books category had previously existed in the National Book Award/American Book Awards program from 1969 to 1983.

Notable Children’s Books

These book titles are selected by a committee from the Association of Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. They are considered the most notable children’s books published from the previous year. Listed at this site are the current notables, along with lists from 1996 up. You can also find lists for the Notable Recordings, Computer Software, Videos, and Web Sites.

Margaret A. Edwards Award for Outstanding Literature  for Young  Adults

The Margaret A. Edwards Award, established in 1988, honors an author's liftetime achievement for writing books that have been popular over a period of time. The annual award is administered by YALSA and sponsored by School Library Journal magazine. It recognizes an author's work in helping adolescents become aware of themselves and addressing questions about their role and importance in relationships, society, and in the world.

Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People

The books that appear in these annotated book lists were evaluated and selected by a Book Review Committee appointed by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and assembled in cooperation with the Children's Book Council (CBC). NCSS and CBC have cooperated on this annual bibliography since 1972. Books selected for this bibliography are written primarily for children in grades K-8.

Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children

The books that appear in these lists were selected as outstanding children's science trade books. They are intended primarily for kindergarten to eighth grade. They were selected by a book review panel appointed by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and assembled in cooperation with the Children's Book Council (CBC). NSTA and CBC have cooperated on this bibliographic project since 1973.

The Notable Children's Books in the Language Arts

A Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English Children's Literature Assembly annually select thirty children's trade books that are outstanding for their potential to enhance language awareness among students in grades K-8.
